We will learn common tools names with pictures in this vocabulary lesson. Tools are special objects we use to help us fix or create things more efficiently. Try to memorise a few items at a time.
1. Electrical tools names and pictures
Electricians and engineers rely on specialised tools for electrical installations, maintenance, and repairs. In this vocabulary lesson, we list some of the most common electrical tools names with pictures to help you memorise them easily.

How many of these tools have you seen before? Have you used any of them? Who usually repairs broken things in your house?

I like to repair things at home. It is part of my hobbies. It also saves me money because I don’t need to call a professional for small problems.

My father used to teach me how to repair things at home. Now I am doing the same with my children. They are having fun while also learning new things.

Be very careful when you fix anything electrical. Always turn off the power first. Use tools with rubber handles and never touch wires with bare hands. If you are not sure what to do, hire a qualified technician.

Some tools are easy to use. Others require some experience. It’s always a good idea to read the instruction manual before using a tool.

Some equipment is not meant to be used by children under a certain age. Hide them in a safe place to avoid any accident.

Keep your tools in one place. Store them in a toolbox. You can put a small sticker with the tool’s name to help you find them and remember what they are called.

2. Gardening equipment

Do you like gardening? Does your house have a garden? If it does, how often do you take care of it?

You don’t need to have a big yard to enjoy gardening. Even a small balcony is enough to grow something.

I like to grow food. I have a few pots on my balcony where I grow African eggplants. I discovered them during my trip to Africa.

I make my own compost. I have a small compost bin to store vegetable peels, fruit scraps, eggshells, etc. Over time, they turn into a natural fertiliser that I use to feed my plants.

Do you use specialised equipment to take care of your garden? Do you know their names in English?

If you are young, a trowel is probably enough to dig a hole. However, you might find a bulb planter useful if you are at an advanced age.

How many of the garden tools I have listed in this lesson have you used before? Perhaps you have never seen some of them before, right?

Plants that grow long need some support to prevent damage (e.g, tomatoes, peppers, peas, etc). A garden twine helps plants grow upright and spread out without damage.

A dibber (also called a dibble or dibble stick) is a simple gardening tool used to make holes in the soil for planting seeds, bulbs, or small seedlings. It usually looks like a pointed stick or a short handle with a metal or wooden spike at the end.

If you want to trim the edges of lawns where a mower can’t reach, you can use an edging shear. They look like large scissors with long handles.

3. Hand tools names with pictures

Hand tools are indispensable in do-it-yourself (DIY) activities. They are many and they can be overwhelming. However, most of them are simple to use.

Hand tools do not need an external power source to function. They are designed for manual tasks.

4. Common measuring items

We use measuring tools to quantify physical properties, such as length, weight, temperature, time, and angles. They are used in construction, science, medicine, engineering, and everyday tasks.

A distance measuring wheel works by rolling along a surface while a mechanical or digital counter records how many times the wheel rotates. Each full rotation equals a set distance, depending on the wheel’s circumference.

A marking gauge has a sharp pin that scratches a straight line on a surface and guides carpenters in making accurate cuts.

5. Fasteners and accessories

We use fasteners to join two or more objects together. If you have children, hide them in a safe place to avoid a choking hazard.

The English word bolt can refer to different things. It can refer to a type of fastener used with a nut to hold materials together securely. It can also mean a metal bar used to lock a door or window.

As you must have noticed by now, some fasteners belong to the same category but are named differently depending on their shape or function. However, they can still be grouped under one general appellation. For example, concrete screws and self-tapping screw can all be called "screws".

Even native speakers cannot name all these tools. Just try to learn the most common ones.

A rod is usually made of wood. We use a rod to join two pieces by putting it into a hole in each piece.

Have you ever fixed or made things using tools? When something is broken in your house, is it you or someone else repairing it? Are you using any safety equipment when fixing things in the house?

6. Storage devices and containers

7. Surgical equipment

Surgeons use special surgical instruments to make precise cuts during operations. This reduces the risk of complications.

A tourniquet is a strip of cloth that can be wrapped tightly around an arm or a leg to stop heavy bleeding during an emergency.

Surgical masks protect us against infectious diseases. They became popular during COVID-19.

8. Other medical tools names
8.1 Injection tools

A lancet is a small, sharp medical tool used to make a quick and shallow cut in the skin. It is used to collect a drop of blood for testing, especially in blood sugar checks for people with diabetes.

8.2 Diagnostic and monitoring systems

A sphygmomanometer is a medical instrument used to check blood pressure. It includes a cuff that wraps around the upper arm and inflates with air, connected to a gauge that displays the pressure reading.

Doctors use a reflex hammer to test if your nervous system is working properly. When the doctor taps certain areas of your body, like your knee or ankle, your body should respond with a small, automatic movement.

A defibrillator is a medical device used to help someone’s heart start beating normally again.

A scanner is a machine that helps doctors see the inside of the body to screen for diseases.
